'Out at Coffee'

9th November 2024

If Coco the greyhound could talk, I wonder what she would say about our weekly ‘Out at Coffee’ catchups!

For all intents and purposes, it appears a very relaxed affair for Lee and Pete’s pampered pooch, who lays beside us; loyal and quiet, only barking when she needs a walk or toilet break.

It’s why we always try and choose a venue that’s dog friendly. Now, sometimes that isn’t possible, and Coco stays at home, but more often than not, she joins us, as was the case this week at the ‘Sunroom’ in Newstead.

The café is located within the Newstead Studios, an architecturally designed, multipurpose, creative space, that sells Australian brands, including books, ceramics, gourmet pantry items, and fine art prints.

The expansive studio is saddled between Ross Street and Wickham Grove, and there are several downstairs seating areas, including, yes you guessed it… a sunroom style space by the main entrance.

The servery is found at the other end of the building, with a large communal table taking centre stage, inviting patrons to sit and enjoy their favourite coffee together.

The Sunroom is cosy, radiating a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere.

This vibe extends to the friendly Baristas, who happily take our coffee order. Lee and Pete also swooping in for a delicious looking cinnamon swirl to share.

The café’s warm reception is extended to Coco, who sprawls out on the cool cement floor next to the communal table.

This spot is a fitting space to share stories and debate topical events, including the shock American election result, and what a second Trump presidency will mean for not only America, but the World.

Our coffee arrives in cute, ceramic mugs, and as we chat, Lee and Pete tuck into their pastry.

Now, seagulls are renowned for having incredible vision to track their prey, and this characteristic is not lost on Lee, who at one point looks at Pete and says in a troubled voice; “I think you’ve eaten more than half?”

To which Pete smiles and responds; “Oh… have I!”

As he pops another piece in his mouth... Lee looking on in disbelief, as we all burst out laughing!

Even Coco doesn’t get a look in this week, and she’s renowned for circling for treats, her helpless, puppy dog eyes screaming in true Scooby Doo fashion; ‘I’m over here!!’

But she must have been sending out some pawsitivity, because the lovely Baristas offer to make her a free Puppuccino, served in her very own ‘Coco Cup’.

And she’s one happy lactose loving pooch, as she laps up the contents, whipped milk spraying the floor with each sloppy lick.

Being ‘Out at Coffee’ is a real treat each week and even more so when Coco, the greyhound is catered for!

I’m sure she loves being part of our weekly ritual and if she could talk, I’m sure she’d bark; ‘Woof! Woof! … Can-Ine have a Puppuccino to go?’

Driving home I reflect on the poignancy of this week’s venue choice. A sunroom provides warmth and protection from the elements. And while our visit to this cosy retreat was shorter than normal, we loved every minute, leaving brighter than when we arrived.

It reminds me that while unsettling events can unfold personally and around the World. We all need to find our own special sunroom. A physical or cognitive space that allows us to relax and not overthink. A place where the reality we create is focused on, kindness to self and others, being thankful, and hope. Because remember; the sun will always come up in the morning!

I love sharing our coffee escapades with you, so please help me share the joy of coffee and friendships. Like, follow and share the ‘Out at Coffee’ Facebook page.
