'Out at Coffee' on

6th September 2025

There’s an air of nervous expectation as Stephen and I pucker up for our latest ‘Out at Coffee’ experience! Lee and Pete took the lead and invited us for a ‘morning kiss’. While we were a little apprehensive at their intentions, we decided to accept subject to no awkward pouting, tongues, or snogging… second hand coffee breath can be oh so not nice!

Our ‘Out at Coffee’ venue is a cute café found on a quieter stretch of James Street, in New Farm. And for those of you who were intrigued with what Lee and Pete had planned, you’ll be relieved to know the café is called, ‘Morning Kiss’.

The café promises to give you: ‘A kiss of flavour in every cup!’, which sounds kinda sweet, and it made my mouth salivate in anticipation of a warm burst of caffeinated bliss.

As we entered, we walked into a quaint servery area, with a number of colourful artworks on the wall. The undercover seating area was out the back. And, Lee and Pete had already secured a table in the furthest, back garden area, next to a small, rentable event room.

We ordered our coffees, and they arrived quickly!

As the waitress placed two cups of flat white in front of Lee and Pete, she asked in a warm oriental tone; “Who’s skinny?”

The tone of her question made us giggle at Stephen’s preference for skimmed milk… but he is tall and thin as well!

To reduce my daily milk intake, I’d ordered a long black with hot milk on the side. It came in a small cup too, which was a relief, as I wouldn’t want to be the one responding to: ‘Who’s the mug!’

As well as being a speciality coffee shop, ‘Morning Kiss’ also offered authentic matcha, cakes, and scrummy breakfasts, including buckwheat crepes. And yes, you guessed it, Lee couldn’t resist a crepe sprinkled with lemon juice and sugar, which he shared, so we all got to taste the delicious treat!

There’s lots of news to catch up on as we hadn’t seen Lee and Pete for a while!

During our chat we talked about day-spas, and I recalled an incident 30 years ago when I accidently walked into the ladies’ changing rooms at an exclusive health retreat in the depths of the English countryside. I’m not sure who screamed the loudest… me or the room of naked women, but I made a prompt exit with bright red cheeks.

My embarrassing gaffe prompted Lee to share an awkward moment too! He recounted a story of rushing into the Wickham Hotel toilet. As he sat in the cubicle, relief pouring over him because he’d made it in time, he heard the main toilet door open, and the space erupted with female voices. He’d accidently rushed into the ladies as well, and while it sounds like his toilet exit proved more difficult, he didn’t bog us down with the detail.

It was a lovely spring morning and the cafe's garden setting was a real treat. And while we didn’t want the moment to end, Coco had other ideas! Pete handed us doggy treats to help placate her, but they didn’t stop her barking, so we head off for a walk along James Street and explore more of this upmarket part of Brisbane.

Today was another great catchup, and as Stephen and I travelled home, I reflected on the concept of planned or spontaneous surprises. Whether it’s planting a morning kiss on the lips of someone you love, saying thank you to the checkout person in the supermarket, giving a compliment to a work colleague just because you can, or calling up a friend to organise a coffee. You’ll be amazed at the huge impact that small, thoughtful action, word, or gesture, can make. It truly has the potential to make someone else’s day. And you’ll feel great for making that effort too!

I love sharing our coffee escapades with you, so please help me share the joy of coffee and friendships. Like, follow and share the ‘Out at Coffee’ Facebook page. And if you have suggestions for a great coffee venue in or around Brisbane, please drop us a line via the Contact page, we’d love to add it to our caffeine calendar.
