'Out at Coffee'

7th December 2024

Lee and Pete propose most of our ‘Out at Coffee’ locations, so this week Stephen and I are secretly pleased with ourselves for coming up with a new, quirky venue! In fact, the pop-up café’s very unconventional, being located in a converted, red double decker bus, parked at Yeronga Bowls Club.

We all love to experience new, unusual places! But in our excitement to try something different, Stephen and I forget one important detail… the café timetable!

Our coffee companions arrive ahead of us and our ‘faux pas’ is revealed when Lee sends a photo of an empty car park with the caption; ‘Oh dear!’ The big red bus is nowhere to be seen and his message is quickly followed by one from Pete, who says; ‘Well, this is embarrassing!’

Stephen and I turn to each other in shock. Goodness… what are we to do?

Buses are renowned for being late! And in the immortal words of the Wiggles, do we wait for; ‘The wheels on the bus go round and round, round and round, round and round!’ But sadly, there’s no time! We need to re-route pronto and find another coffee location.

Stephen messages back; ‘Golly Gosh!’ It’s a polite way of screaming; ‘OMG!’ at our situation. But funnily, it’s also the name of our second café option nearby. And it’s open Thursday to Monday… so he sends the guys directions!

Stephen and I arrive first and grab an outside, shaded table. ‘Golly Gosh’ has a fun, casual vibe with ‘Uno’ cards on each table for patrons to play. It’s popular with canine lovers. In fact, there’s pooches everywhere, so Coco the greyhound will fit in well when she arrives with Lee and Pete!

We wait patiently for the guys to join us, but they’re nowhere to be seen. Hmmm… somethings not right! We start to get a little concerned, so Stephen messages; ‘We have a table!’ To which Pete responds; ‘Are we in the wrong place?’

Stephen follows up with a call and bursts out laughing when he realises, they’re a tad lost.

‘OMG!’ … can this morning go any more awry!

Luckily they’re close by and within minutes they appear in desperate need of coffee and treats.

We review the extensive 11-page menu and ‘WOW’… this is a foodie’s heaven! There’s so many yummy sounding, sweet and savoury choices to choose from, and we can see why this place is favoured by dog owners with three canine options;  puppuccino, puppy pancakes, and a dog meat option too!

As Coco would say; ‘Woof! Woof!’

Lee and Pete treat Coco to a free puppuccino, while they opt for a large, calorific cookie with their coffee. Stephen and I go for the slightly healthier option of fruit toast with ours.

There are multiple ordering sections here, which is a little confusing, but our coffee and food arrive quickly. It’s all well-presented and tasty, and the coffee is especially good!

Summer is well and truly upon us, and the heat and humidity make things uncomfortable, so we keep moving seats to stay shaded and grab any breeze.

As we chat Stephen and I share news about our recent trip to Melbourne with his mum. And having messaged her to say where we are this week, she pops by for a brief visit to say hi, which is a nice surprise!

Lee and Pete share news of their week and recommend a risqué gay drama on ABC iView they’ve binged called; ‘Cucumber – Banana – Tofu’.
Initially, I thought they were sharing a new memory test with us, like the one a few weeks back they called; IPC – ‘Ibis – Plover - Curlew’.
But very quickly I realise my error and from their enthusiasm, it’s a quirky, somewhat racy comedy about relationships, which Stephen and I need to watch.
Today’s ‘Out at coffee’ is short because we’re meeting up later to celebrate our good friend Jan’s 70th birthday.

As Stephen and I travel home, all I can say is; ‘Thank ‘Goodness’ for Golly Gosh!’ Our initial gaffe proved a tad stressful for a moment there, but thankfully, we were able to come up with an alternative quickly.

It’s a timely reminder for us all not to take things too seriously. Sometimes, even the best laid plans can be impacted by things outside our control. It can lead to feelings of panic and worry, but in reality, there’s usually other options available, we just need to be open to the possibility of things working out differently. So, if you ever find yourself challenged and want to scream Holy C**p … take three deep breaths, smile and calmly say; ‘Golly Gosh!’, as you find another way forward.

2024 proved a challenging year for many, so from the ‘Out at Coffee’ gang, here’s to a bonza 2025 for everyone! And by the way… we’ll definitely be stopping by the big red bus soon, so watch this space!

I love sharing our coffee escapades with you, so please help me share the joy of coffee and friendships. Like, follow and share the ‘Out at Coffee’ Facebook page. And if you have suggestions for a great coffee venue in or around Brisbane, please drop us a line via the Contact page, we’d love to add it to our caffeine calendar.
