'Out at Coffee'

24th August 2024

It’s been well over four years since our coffee group ventured to the café on top of the Kangaroo Point cliffs. Now called Joey's, it stands isolated and unassuming in its clifftop location. But don’t be fooled… like a baby roo peeking out from within its mother’s pouch; the big Joey's sign and cute Piaggio delivery scooter at the entrance, give a clue to the warm riviera themed experience that awaits you inside.

As Stephen and I wait to be seated, the coastal vibe draws us in and any traffic noise from the busy intersection disappears behind ambient music and the excited chatter of breakfast diners.

A smiling, smartly dressed waitress welcomes us to Joey's, and as she leads us to Lee and Pete, who are sitting in the dog friendly part of the alfresco dining area, we’re paraded past a pastry cabinet full of enticing pastries.

Stephen and I look at each other, read each other’s minds and smile. Yes… we’ll be seagulls this week too and order something to eat!

We join Lee and Pete at a table that enjoys fabulous views across to the Botanical Gardens, and from our vantage point you can see the Brisbane River snake its way through the city in both directions.

The cityscape is complimented by comfortable, refreshing coastal décor which gives Joey's a sophisticated Noosa vibe.

Lee and Pete have already had breakfast at home, but that doesn’t stop them from ordering pastries with their coffee.

In fact, Pete’s almond croissant is so big, Lee has to help him eat it, and that’s after he’s devoured his own cake first.

Stephen and I choose something more substantial from the stylish breakfast menu. As a sharing couple, we split a serve of Greek influenced avocado on toast with Stephen’s preference for eggs on sourdough.

The food is simply presented, but looks elegant, and our taste buds aren’t disappointed.

As we chat over breakfast, Lee updates us on his imminent trip to Paris. He’s joining our good friend Steve on a short, long-haul trip to the French capital, while Pete stays home to look after Coco.

His excitement is palpable, but flying standby brings an element of the unknown and he’s having to cover all possibilities, especially if he’s offloaded at Charles de Gaulle Airport, which would be very; ‘Oh la la!’ if that happened!

Joey's is a refreshing surprise! It’s the type of place where breakfast could so easily blend into lunch, then afternoon tea, followed by wine and cocktails, before finally dinner. Even Coco is settled and doesn’t give her customary bark to get going.

After a second coffee, we decide to walk breakfast off and carefully descend the steep stone steps to the bottom of the cliffs. Coco tries her best to navigate them, but her long greyhound legs can’t cope, so Lee sweeps their fur baby heroically into his arms and carries her down.

As we walk along the river, we watch in awe as dozens of abseilers navigate their way up and down the sheer cliff face.

It reminds me of a time last year, when we saw a guy dangling upside down, having just traversed the cliff ledge.

His fear was visible and we stood terrified that it wouldn’t end well. But he had calm, caring support around him, and they were able to talk him down safely.

This memory made me reflect on my own life! At times I have felt like that terrified abseiler; helpless,  overwhelmed with what was happening, and unable to see a way forward.

It made me realise how blessed I am for the wonderful, steadfast support I have round me. Family and friends who have helped me put things in perspective and acted as my guide when I needed to regain control of my ropes.

And this was only possible because I’d been willing to be vulnerable, voice my fears, and share that I wasn’t coping and needed help.

So, next time you feel sad, fearful or overwhelmed, remember to share how you feel with someone you trust. And conversely, let those around you know that you’re there for them too… only then can you support each other through life’s highs and lows.

It's been another great meetup and we ascend the cliffs by the Lookout Point. We then finish with a stroll along the lane by Lamb House… a privately owned, heritage listed property, that’s been lovingly restored to its original grandeur.

I love sharing our coffee escapades with you, so please help me share the joy of coffee and friendships. Like, follow and share the ‘Out at Coffee’ Facebook page. And if you have suggestions for a great coffee venue in or around Brisbane, please drop us a line via the Contact page, we’d love to add it to our caffeine calendar.
