'Out at Coffee'

21st December 2024

You can tell a lot about a person when they talk, their accent and language alluding to their birthplace, upbringing and education. I originate from the UK, so Stephen will often laugh at my English vocabulary and pronunciation.

To me, a truck will always be a lorry, we watch telly, I sometimes say; ‘tickidibo’ when I’m leaving home, and I have a certain way of saying his mum’s name – Margaret, in such a stylish and refined way, it can stop conversation and make people repeat what I’ve said.

Every country has its own enunciation and Aussies will always look for a shorter, larrikin inspired alternative; a politician is a ‘pollie’, afternoon is ‘arvo’, and beautiful is ‘beaut’ or a ‘bewdy’.

But there’s something passionate and sexy about the Italian language, and the word beautiful is a prime example.

Translated as ‘Bellissimo’, you can imagine an Italian saying it in a deep, sultry voice, as they kiss their thumb and forefinger; ‘Bellissimo!’… which leads in nicely to this week’s ‘Out at Coffee’ experience in Coorparoo!

‘Bellissimo Coffee’ is an award-winning roaster that supplies roasted beans across Brisbane including a previous ‘Out at Coffee’ venue; Joeys at Kangaroo Point.

Stephen suggested we try here, as our pre-Christmas catchup, and yes, given last week’s shenanigans, he double checked it was open before telling Lee and Pete.

The place is already abuzz with activity when we arrive at 7.15am, with caffeine lovers everywhere.

The industrial building is large, with high ceilings and numerous hanging baskets making the location feel stylish and uber chic. Ambient lighting hangs above the servery and the large seating area leads through to the commercial roasting machines.

We decide to sit outside on benches by the entrance, so Coco the greyhound can lie comfortably, and Stephen and Pete head inside to order coffee.

We’ve all eaten breakfast this morning already, so no treats needed today. But when has that ever stopped this flock of gluttonous gulls!

So, there's no surprise when Stephen and Pete return with fruit toast and a savoury pastry, prompting Lee to say in disbelief; ‘I thought we weren’t hungry!’ His comment makes us all chuckle, as we tuck in heartily and demolish our food in less than a minute... Bon Appetit!

Stephen and I share our coffees, one’s made with their ‘Italian’ blend and the other called ‘Ultimo’! And our verdict; the smooth texture of the ‘Italian’ was simply ‘Bellissimo!

As we catch up on news, we watch as a couple, who have taken a shortcut through the neighbouring school grounds, climb over a locked picket fence. At one point it looked a tad perilous for the wife, and there was chance of an ‘imbarazzante incidente’, but thankfully her husband was close by to guide her over… and we all breath a huge sigh of relief!

This morning's catchup was lots of fun and before heading home to finish prepping for the impending Christmas festivities, we take a walk back through the café and view the impressive roasting area at the rear of the building.

The passion and enthusiasm the ‘Bellissimo’ team show for their coffee is clear to see and taste! It reminds me how important it is for us all to do what we love! Whether it’s found in your career or your free time, it’s a crucial ingredient to leading a fulfilled and happy life. The Italians call that purpose; ‘Scopo’. So today, take time out to think about your Scopo and what ignites your passion, and if it’s not part of your life, then you’re the only person who can do something about it!

I love sharing our coffee escapades with you, so please help me share the joy of coffee and friendships. Like, follow and share the ‘Out at Coffee’ Facebook page.
